To a Culture That Believes "You Are Enough"

Our culture tells us, “you are enough.”

This phrase makes me cringe for several reasons. Most importantly, if we believe that we are enough, we lose all need for God. Additionally, ‘enough’ is such a subjective word. How much is enough? If my continual failure is considered ‘enough’ then the bar isn’t set very high. In that case, is ‘enough’ really all that I want? If what I am on my own is enough, then I desire to be abundantly more than enough.

There is so much pressure in that phrase. If I am enough, then what does that mean when I face a situation that I realize I can’t handle? Am I forced to throw in the towel and give up? Just thinking about this makes me tense. Are you as stressed out as I am?

Thankfully, ‘you are enough’ is not what God says to us. He makes it clear that we are not enough. Thankfully, we don’t have to be, because He is. He created us and knows our limitations more intimately that we know them ourselves. And those limitations mean zilch. With the Holy Spirit in us, we have all of the power of God through Christ dwelling within us.

What is your limitation? What weakness or insecurity holds you back from following what God is calling you to do? The very thing that makes you the least likely candidate for the work God is sending you to, is the very area that He will use to demonstrate His power.
