The High Achievers Guide to Waiting

I feel the need to make the most of every minute. Any fellow achievers out there will understand what I am talking about. Even if I am on vacation, I have to make the most of the experience. Days are packed with activities and the schedule is carefully coordinated. Even arranging the luggage is a delicate game of tetris expertly mastered, each item placed for maximum efficiency. Precision and planning are the keys to success.

Needless to say, the value of waiting, stillness, and silence does not come naturally to me. In fact, they are nothing short of agonizing. I can't help but think of the scene from the movie Zootopia of the bunny waiting in line at the DMV fully staffed by sloths. Just watching that scene makes me twitch.

As I sit in one place, squirming with anticipation for what God has next, I have the attention span of a toddler. What’s next? I’m ready! Let’s do this! Show me the plan, and I will take it from here, thank you very much. That is following your will, right? After all, I am letting you choose the direction. But don't worry about any of the details, God, I am an expert.

I am goal-oriented, and as such, I would like to reach the destination as efficiently as possible. In this case, God should reveal the next step to me as soon as I learn to humble myself and ask Him. Unfortunately, God is not goal-oriented, He is eternity-oriented. Efficiency to the destination is not His priority. His aim is effectiveness, and that effectiveness has nothing to do with meeting a deadline or reaching a goal. It has to do with how I grow in the waiting.
